Though embroidery based using both hand and machine, she also incorporates other techniques such as painting, crayoning, applique etc., as the effects she looks to achieve - the changes of surface texture, the play of light on different materials - could not be accomplished by stitchery alone.
The background fabric is invariably silk as it gives such luminosity to the paints she uses and facilitates very fine, delicate work with threads usually no more than one strand and, often, very tiny scraps of fabric requiring positioning with eyebrow tweezers.
